SEL™ Submerged Effluent Launder
Get Into the Flow
The SEL™ Submerged Effluent Launder is your solution for tough effluent management challenges, solving the common problems of uneven flow distribution, high velocities, and algae growth.
By reducing velocity vectors and ensuring even flow distribution, the SEL system enhances the settling process and improves effluent quality. Its superior performance, lower maintenance costs, and enhanced safety make it the ideal choice for both new and retrofit wastewater treatment plant projects.
And it’s cost-effective. The SEL system’s multi-functional components eliminate the need for launder covers, algae brush or spray systems, weirs, scum baffles, and density current baffles. Moreover, it removes the need for manual cleaning of effluent launders.
THE PROBLEM
Traditional effluent launder systems are often plagued with uneven flow distribution and high velocities, leading to poor settling and higher total suspended solids (TSS) in the effluent. These systems also require extensive maintenance and are prone to algae growth and fouling.
THE OVIVO SOLUTION
The SEL system solves these issues by providing a stable environment with reduced velocities. Its proprietary sizing program ensures uniform flow around the tank perimeter by optimizing orifice size, depth, spacing, and other parameters.
The result? Better settling, lower TSS, and minimal algae growth, eliminating the need for costly manual cleaning.
HOW IT WORKS
The SEL system is comprised of an upper launder plate and a lower launder plate.
The upper launder plate’s three sections serve five functions. The upper section is a vertical plate that functions as a scum baffle and as a connection point to the clarifier tank wall. The middle section, integral to the upper and lower sections and angled downwardly and obliquely, functions as the upper boundary of the submerged launder. In addition, orifices are located near the bottom of the middle section to collect clarifier effluent. Serving the function of a launder cover, orifices are submerged to minimize sunlight and prevent algae growth. The lower section, integral to the upper and middle sections and angled downwardly and obliquely, extends below the lower launder plate, serving as a density current baffle.
The lower launder section serves as the bottom boundary of the submerged launder. It is anchored to the clarifier tank wall and fastened to the upper launder section above the density current baffle section and below the orifices.
Throughout the process, the system uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to optimize performance.
APPLICATIONS
- Municipal wastewater treatment plants
- Industrial effluent treatment systems
- Retrofit projects for existing treatment facilities

Cost- and Time-Efficient
Eliminates the need for launder covers, algae cleaning systems, weirs, scum baffles, density current baffles, and access walkways around the tank, significantly reducing installation time and costs.
Simplified Installation
No need to form concrete effluent launders; the system is self-supporting and requires no external supports.
Lower Maintenance Costs
Removes the need for algae brush or spray cleaning systems, reducing maintenance and replacement costs.
Enhanced Safety
Eliminates manual cleaning of effluent launders and prevents launder cover projectiles during high winds, addressing associated safety concerns.
Reduced Algae Issues
Minimizes algae growth and downstream algae fouling problems.
Improved Performance
Features more surface area for settling, full surface area skimming, and submerged orifices to prevent floatables. Ensures equal or better effluent quality.
Better Flow Management
Prevents unequal flow distribution during high winds and minimizes UV degradation.
