THE PROBLEM
Harmful and widespread PFAS contamination is an urgent public health and environmental threat.
Common treatment approaches for removing PFAS from water, wastewater, and landfill leachates involve separation through reverse osmosis (RO) or adsorption using media such as granular-activated carbon and ion-exchange resin.
These common treatment approaches are often not cost-effective or able to meet treatment objectives in cases with difficult-to-treat water matrices, like landfill leachates, industrial wastewaters, or RO concentrates. In addition, with these common approaches, PFAS is simply separated from the water, wastewater, and leachate and concentrated into either a liquid or solid waste stream, both of which require additional and costly off-site management for disposal.
Without proper cradle-to-grave management of these concentrated waste streams, PFAS could be re-released into the environment, exposing treatment providers to major financial and legal liabilities.
THE E2METRIX SOLUTION
Olift™ uses microbubbles selectively generated with air and ozone in a multiphase process that lifts and removes PFAS through a foam fractionation process. The removed PFAS is concentrated into a foam, called foamate, that can be separated and later destroyed with Obreak™ electro-oxidation.
Ozone can increase PFAS removal effectiveness and boost concentration factors. In addition, it will oxidize other organic co-contaminants in the water, wastewater, and landfill leachate, thereby reducing downstream Obreak™ destruction costs. Ozone can also reduce polishing media consumption by co-contaminants, should the foam fractionation-treated effluent require additional polishing to meet treatment standards.

HOW IT WORKS
Olift™ integrates both ozone and air microbubbles into PFAS-contaminated water, wastewater, or leachate streams within specially designed columns. This process generates unique bubbles that possess greater overall surface area and higher electrostatic charge to attract PFAS to the surface of the bubbles for removal.
These small bubbles, along with the PFAS, are lifted to the surface of the liquid and form a concentrated foam, or foamate, at the top of the column. The foamate is subsequently extracted, condensed, and further concentrated to reduce its volume prior to on-site destruction using Obreak™.
The small volume of foamate enriched with PFAS is generally less than 1% of the treated influent, enabling economical onsite destruction.
