THE PROBLEM

Standard thickeners cannot control the consistency of the sludge bed. To get acceptable cake solids, operators juggle variables such as polymer dosages and dewatering equipment speeds. A miscalibration in just one of the variables could result in damage to expensive equipment.

THE OVIVO SOLUTION

It’s a case of applying something old to something new. Ovivo applied a decades-old process—recirculating and mixing technology used in applications such as solids contact clarifiers—to thickeners. The Sludge Blend Thickener keeps the sludge bed mixed and recirculated inside the thickener. This not only creates a homogeneous sludge bed but also reduces the chance of a thickener sludge bed stratifying. And it lessens the likelihood of rat-holing or of rake arms overloading or binding.

A BREAKTHROUGH THAT KEEPS THE SLUDGE BED CONTINUOUSLY MIXED AND RECIRCULATED

HOW IT WORKS

The influent flow is brought up through the bottom of the bed and continues up a center column and out the influent ports inside the feed well. The particles then settle and are brought toward the center via rake arms. Using an impeller located in the center column, the sludge is pulled gently back through the bottom center column ports and joins the influent, where it is mixed and begins the process of homogenizing the bed.
